Practical Applications of Culturally Reflexive Supervision in Creative Arts Therapy
What to Expect
The topics of cultural humility and reflexivity are essential components of ethical, responsive, and culturally attuned creative arts therapy practice and supervision. Grounded in liberatory and anti-oppressive frameworks, this workshop will utilize group discussion, self-reflective experiential exercises, and didactic teaching to explore how cultural humility and reflexive practices take shape through the interplay of identifications, relationships, institutional expectations, and material conditions within creative arts therapy supervision. Participants will examine how these changing relations create opportunities and constraints for supervisory practice, and what becomes possible for inclusive and equitable care as these relations shift.

Cultural humility and reflexivity are foundational to ethical, responsive, and culturally attuned practice and supervision in Creative Arts Therapies. Grounded in liberatory and anti-oppressive frameworks, this interactive workshop examines how culturally reflexive supervision can create possibilities for more equitable supervisory relationships and strengthen inclusive clinical practice. Through didactic instruction, facilitated dialogue, self-reflective experiential exercises, and group discussion, participants will explore how social and professional identifications, positionality, power, privilege, institutional expectations, and material conditions come into relation and assemble in particular moments, shaping what becomes possible or constrained in supervisory dynamics, clinical decision-making, and professional practice.
Participants will be introduced to foundational concepts and terminology that underpin this approach to supervision while engaging in mapping identifications and relationships and other reflexive practices designed to examine how their positions, assumptions, and capacities shift across supervisory and therapeutic encounters. The workshop will examine how systemic forces, including racism, ableism, patriarchy, and capitalism operate through supervisory and therapeutic relationships and consider how implicit bias, assumptions, and cultural transference/countertransference may emerge within these relations. Throughout the workshop, participants will practice strategies for noticing, questioning, and responding to these dynamics, including approaches to facilitating dialogue related to race, identifications, power, and oppression; and examining personal and institutional assumptions. Participants will leave with reflexive practices and practical tools for continuing to inquire into changing supervisory relationships and conditions, recognizing opportunities for putting anti-oppressive and culturally reflexive commitments into practice in Creative Arts Therapy settings, supporting ethical supervision, professional development, and more equitable participant care.
Objectives
Participants will identify key cultural considerations in creative arts therapy supervision and demonstrate understanding by using current terminology for diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural humility, and reflexivity during discussion.
Participants will analyze how race and other social identities influence therapeutic and supervisory relationships and apply this understanding to ethical professional practice.
Participants will examine the dimensions that shape supervisee and supervisor identities and apply this understanding to strengthen the supervisory relationship and processes.
Participants will evaluate opportunities for anti-oppressive and culturally responsive supervisory practices within creative arts therapy supervision and develop at least one actionable advocacy strategy to incorporate into their professional practice.
